Profile and vertical

Schwarz analysis links sagittal jaw relations with vertical profile through SN, NL, and MP planes on the lateral cephalogram. The European school is familiar for reading class and vertical together without changing landmarks. CephCalc calculates SNA, SNB, ANB, and SN-MP, SN-NL, NL-MP on one tracing. For lips switch to Holdaway on the same film. European SN–NL–MP framework for everyday reporting.

About the method

Schwarz analysis links sagittal jaw relationships with vertical profile through SN, NL, and MP planes on the lateral cephalogram. The European Schwarz school is familiar for reading class and vertical together without changing landmarks. Angles SN-MP, SN-NL, and NL-MP describe palatal and mandibular plane tilt relative to the cranial base. Incisor inclination to NL and MP shows dentoalveolar compensation. In CephCalc the preset delivers the core skeletal–incisor set; expanded soft-tissue block is on the roadmap. NL-MP and SN-MP often explain why vertical prognosis changes in Class II.

What the analysis focuses on

Sagittal SNA, SNB, ANB, angles SN-MP, SN-NL, NL-MP, incisor inclination to NL and MP.

When to use it clinically

Used for comprehensive profile and vertical assessment in everyday diagnosis. Convenient for comparison with Schmüth and Downs in teaching on one image. For lip esthetics switch to Holdaway or Merrifield without re-uploading. Schwarz does not replace McNamara airways for airway questions. On case review, match the CephCalc table with profile photos, models, and TMJ exam: numbers without context are easy to misread. Link I-NL and i-MP to torque discussion. Compare Schwarz and Schmüth in one CephCalc PDF.

What CephCalc calculates

  • 19 landmarks
  • 13 measurements
  • SNA: ∠ SNA — angle between lines S–N and A–N (maxillary position relative to the cranial base)
  • SNB: ∠ SNB — angle between lines S–N and B–N (mandibular position)
  • ANB: ∠ ANB — difference in jaw positions: angle between B–N and A–N
  • SN-MP: ∠ SN-MP — angle between S–N and the mandibular tangent K2–Me
  • SN-NL: ∠ SN-NL — orientation of the palatal plane PNS–ANS relative to S–N
  • NL-MP: ∠ NL-MP — angle between the palatal plane and K2–Me
  • I-NL: ∠ I-NL — upper incisor inclination to the palatal plane
  • i-MP: ∠ i-MP — lower incisor inclination B1–B2 to the K2–Me plane
  • Ii: ∠ Ii — interincisal angle between incisor axes
  • Ns-Pn-Pog: ∠ Ns–Pn–PogSoft — soft-tissue profile angle at the nasal tip (Schwarz)
  • H-angle: ∠ H-angle (Holdaway) — angle at N between lines N–PogSoft and N–Pn
  • E-Ls: E-Ls (mm) — distance from Ls to the esthetic line Pn–PogSoft (+ lip anterior to line)
  • E-Li: E-Li (mm) — distance from Li to the esthetic line Pn–PogSoft (+ lip anterior to line)

Schwarz measurements for training

Schwarz teaches reading sagittal and vertical on one tracing. NL–MP and SN-NL describe palatal plane position. Incisor inclination to NL and MP shows dentoalveolar compensation. Students benefit from comparing Schwarz with Downs in one CephCalc PDF.
  • SNA, SNB, ANB
  • SN-MP, SN-NL, NL-MP
  • I-NL, i-MP
  • Ii — interincisal balance

ANS–PNS and MP: tracing errors

ANS and PNS define NL: PNS shift changes NL-MP. Go and Me stabilize MP. With head tilt check SN before reading vertical angles. Incisor axes follow crowns.
  • ANS, PNS on cortex
  • Go at angle of mandible
  • NL not through the dental arch
  • Check SN when head is tilted

Combinations and limitations

Schwarz does not replace Jarabak for growth type by S-Go/N-Me. McNamara adds lengths. Holdaway covers E-line. CephCalc switches presets without re-uploading the film.
  • Schmüth — comparative DE report
  • Wits — sagittal refinement
  • Jarabak — growth type
  • Holdaway — E-line

Frequently asked questions

Where can I run Schwarz analysis online?
In CephCalc upload a lateral cephalogram, select Schwarz, and mark S, N, A, B, ANS, PNS, Go, and Me. Sagittal, vertical, and incisor blocks appear with race-specific norms.
How is Schwarz related to Schmüth and Downs?
Schwarz, Schmüth, and Downs read similar SNA, SNB, and ANB angles but group vertical NL–MP and SN-MP differently. Comparison on one film teaches which school sits behind the numbers.
How should a resident read NL–MP with ANB?
NL–MP describes palatal plane inclination to MP; SN-MP links MP to SN. Read them with ANB: vertical rotation can change profile without large base shift.
Does Schwarz include a soft-tissue block?
Schwarz soft tissue in CephCalc: Ns–Pn–PogSoft angle, H-angle, and E-line. Holdaway and Merrifield remain available for a detailed lip profile.
When is Schwarz not enough?
For airway and detailed esthetics add McNamara airways and Holdaway. Wits refines sagittal relations when ANB is borderline on vertical compensation.
