Linear analysis

About the method

Linear analysis collects lateral ceph dimensions in millimetres: anterior cranial base length, anterior and posterior face heights, and mandibular body and ramus lengths. Incisor and first molar dentoalveolar heights show where elongation or shortening developed. Upper molar to PTV helps you judge space for distalization. The calculation needs a ruler on the image: without calibration, millimetres stay empty.

What the analysis focuses on

N–S, N–ANS, ANS–Me, N–Me, lower face share, S–Go, Go–Me, Ar–Go, incisor and molar heights, U6–PTV.

When to use it clinically

Helps you tell whether an open or deep bite is dentoalveolar or skeletal. In vertical problems, compare U6–NL and L6–MP with face heights. Linear norms depend on age and sex, so read them with growth in mind for children. Check scale against the cephalostat ruler, not the file size.

What CephCalc calculates

  • 17 landmarks
  • 17 measurements
  • N-S: N–S (mm) — anterior cranial base length
  • N-ANS: N–ANS (mm) — upper anterior face height
  • ANS-Me: ANS–Me (mm) — lower anterior face height
  • N-Me: N–Me (mm) — total anterior face height
  • ANS-Me/N-Me: ANS–Me / N–Me (%) — lower face share of anterior face height
  • S-Go: S–Go (mm) — posterior face height
  • S-Go/N-Me: S-Go/N-Me (%) — ratio of posterior to anterior face height
  • Go-Me: Go–Me (mm) — mandibular body length
  • Ar-Go: Ar–Go (mm) — ramus height
  • U1-NL: U1–NL (mm) — upper incisor height: A1 perpendicular to the palatal plane
  • U6-NL: U6–NL (mm) — upper first molar height: U6 perpendicular to the palatal plane
  • L1-MP: L1–MP (mm) — lower incisor height: B1 perpendicular to K2–Me
  • L6-MP: L6–MP (mm) — lower first molar height: P6 perpendicular to K2–Me
  • U6-Ptv: U6–PTV (mm, Ricketts) — U6 to the Frankfort perpendicular through Ptm
  • SNA: ∠ SNA — angle between lines S–N and A–N (maxillary position relative to the cranial base)
  • SNB: ∠ SNB — angle between lines S–N and B–N (mandibular position)
  • ANB: ∠ ANB — difference in jaw positions: angle between B–N and A–N
